WYCROFT PINOT NOIR

Wycroft offers premium pinot noir from a boutique vineyard in one of the new world's leading pinot noir regions.

Wycroft seeks to make the best pinot noir possible by combining the vineyard's unique micro-climate, old world winemaking traditions and new world expertise. Wycroft's advertising slogan states its commitment to just one grape - "Purely Pinot Noir."

Wycroft pinot noir is eagerly sought by discerning restaurants and discriminating pinotphiles, and the 2005 vintage was chosen to be served to delegates during the Pinot Noir New Zealand 2007 International Conference, billed as the most important wine event in NZ to date.

In a nationwide three-city tasting in October 2006 more than 1,000 pinot noir buyers paid $40 each to taste 67 of the top 2005 pinots, chosen from 150 submitted. Wycroft was voted fourth favourite wine. In the same tasting tour in 2007 this time of 96 pinots chosen from 200 submitted, Wycroft was again was chosen in the top 10.

Wycroft is a 16ha property, near the Wairarapa town of Masterton. On the silt/loam and gravel terrace built up by the Waipoua River it is tucked under the Tararua Mountain range, and experiences intense summer temperatures, with a high diurnal range and crisp winters. Masterton pioneered New Zealand's first successful vineyard in the 19 th century, but prohibition forced its closure. Only in the last 30 years have vineyards been replanted and it is now a world-recognised producer of fine wines.

Wycroft's intensive planting (the equivalent of 8,000 vines per ha) ensures low cropping and optimum flavour development, and all work in the vineyard is done by hand under the guidance of leading viticulturist Nick Hoskins, who established Martinborough Vineyard.

Winemaker Chris Buring trained at the University of California, at Davis, and has made 17 vintages in nearby Martinborough, earning many national and international medals and trophies.
